[Helpdesk] Spyware?

O Great Collective Oracle,

Just noticed that when I go to some bigtime websites like citysearch, 
I get ads tailored to Santa Fe.
How do they know that?
Does this suggest that I have some spyware or something that I might 
be able to ditch?
