When you say 'I hit Safari, it says cannot connect to server?' Where  
you able to go to any other web sites? Or do you mean you were not  
able to connect to the internet? Were you able to send and receive  
emails at this point in time?

'Messages sent to  earthlink are coming thru to Mail.  What is up?'
Ah, Mail is an email application and probably has been configured to  
access your Earhlink account. Giving you the ability to send and  
receive email from Mail without having to go to www.Earthlink.net,  
sign in to you account and get your email.
