Before you switch to Retrospect, I suggest you check out (free trial)  
SuperDuper!. It is much more flexible than Carbon Copy Cloner, and it  
is much less complicated and much faster than Retrospect. SuperDuper!  
also has a special feature, called a "safety clone," which permits  
you to try out system and other major updates and easily revert to  
the earlier version if the update
doesn't work for you. Retrospect probably is better for backing up  
specific files, but for what you are trying to do, I think  
SuperDuper! wins easily. Customer service is also terrific. I have no  
connection  to the developer; I am just a very satisfied customer.
