Rather than swamp everyone with a bunch of e-mails I'll take this
opportunity to thank Vint and Scott for their help. Mac users have to
be the most helpful people in the world!

Giuseppe. the drive was making a fairly loud high pitched "whirling"
noise when I started my computer. The sound became less and less loud
over a period of about 5 minutes. After than the sound was a high
pitched buzz. The disk icon did not show up on my monitor. I thought my
internal hard drive was making the noise. I disconnected the external
drive and the noise stopped. I connected it to my iBook and it didn't
make the noise but the icon didn't show up.
Sheesh, it's hard to describe a noise!!!!

I haven't run any, thank goodness.

I've started reading about this. One review said " Restrain the urge to
fix things. First ask, 'Is my life, project, job sunk without the
information on that drive?' " While my life or my job (I work for
myself) are not sunk several books in progress are definitely sunk!
Thanks for the help.
