I continue to USE and recommend - the LaCie D2 Extreme - external -
250 GB drive with USB 2.0, Firewire 400 & 800 ALL built. The larger
units (400 GB up) tend to have inadequate power bricks that fail
under the load put upon them. The 250 is metal (radiates damaging
heat) and has NO FAN to eventually clog , die, or fail - not needed.
The external power brick removes some of the heat build up by being
external to the case. (sits on the floor).
Street prices vary - expect around $220.00 ---- NOTE: Low
Voltage from your wall outlet is the biggest cause of motor failure
(hard drives, fans inside your computer, DVD drives, etc.) -- Having
a real UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) with a Voltage Regulator
helps protect your equipment from "brown outs" and voltage spikes. A
very good investment. I personally use APC (American Power
Conversion) units.
Hoping this sheds light and that this helps you.
