[Helpdesk] unable to view mpg from Russia

Does anyone have a clue as to which software I might use to open a mpg 
file from a friend in Russia. I am getting an error message with 
Quicktime... "QuickTime cannot open the file: "The last Tsar and 
Tsarina_part_1.mpg"
it is not a file that QuickTime understands (-2048)"

My friend put a lot of work into translating into English - and it took 
at least 2 months to arrive here - hate to ask her to send a different 
file format.  (also very expensive to mail from Russia)
