[Helpdesk] Appleworks problem

Whenever I try to download a document from an attachment using OS 10.3.9 the 
message
appears "The application Appleworks 6 has unexpectedly quit." I then need to 
go to
Classic to read the document using Microsoft Word.   What am I doing wrong?
