***Editor's Note: Do you design websites? Create slideshows, music or
movies,? Do you edit photos, write books, or design homes? Are you
plotting the stars, documenting chemtrails, working out the cure for
cancer or hunger? Are you putting the final touches on your free
energy invention? No matter what you use your Mac for, sharing how
you do it will inspire others to new levels of whatever they us their
Mac for.

Let one of the SFMUG Board members know and we'll help you tell your
story to the group.

    ............………….......... RAFFLE

This month's fantastic primary raffle item is none other than iWork
'05! You've all seen the stunning presentations by our speakers, and
many of you have asked them, "How did you do that?" The one thing
they have in common is Keynote, Apple's premier presentation
software. The other half of iWork is Pages, Apple's stylish word
processor with all the tools and templates you need to create
everything from school newsletters to business presentations. iWork
retails for $79.00, but it can all be yours for a lucky $2 raffle
ticket (assuming it has the winning number...).

Also offered for the raffle this month are a couple of relevant Take
Control ebooks related to all things iPod. First, there is the book
by our featured presenter Steven Sande, entitled "Take Control of
Your iPod: Beyond the Music." The second book is "Take Control of
Podcasting on the Mac" by Andy Williams Affleck, covering in detail
what is undoubtedly the hottest thing to hit the Internet since
blogging. These ebooks normally retail for $10.00 apiece, and we'll
be offering two of each title (a total of four separate items) for
the raffle.

As always, we may have something else cool show up just in time for
the meeting. Support SFMUG and purchase a fistful of raffle tickets!

If you want to buy one of the ebooks mentioned, here are details on
how to get a 10% MUG discount:

TidBITS has released "Take Control of Your iPod: Beyond the Music"

If you own an iPod or are thinking about purchasing one, the latest
Take Control ebook - Steve Sande's "Take Control of Your iPod: Beyond
the Music" - will help you make the most of your iPod experience.
Although this ebook covers the basics of plugging in a new iPod and
transferring music to it, most of its 128 pages focus on all the
other cool stuff you can do to help your expensive iPod earn its
keep. Steve provides real-world advice about tasks like using your
iPod as a read-only PDA for calendar events and contacts, off-loading
photos to it from a digital camera, backing up your computer to an
iPod, setting an iPod to put you to sleep at night and wake you in
the morning, and even keeping it ready as an emergency boot drive.
Leaving no stone unturned, he also looks at other unusual iPod uses,
such as giving presentations from an iPod, reading or listening to
text-based ebooks, recording classes or meetings, and installing
Linux on an iPod. As a bonus for readers wanting to buy a new or used
iPod, a detailed appendix helps sort out the members of the current
iPod family and provides a complete timeline of iPod releases. Like
all Take Control ebooks, "Take Control of Your iPod: Beyond the
Music" comes with free minor updates that will keep it current with
Apple's constant stream of iPod and iTunes announcements.

TidBITS has released "Take Control of Podcasting on the Mac"

If you're excited about the idea of creating your very own podcast
but need help getting started or working efficiently, you can now hop
on the podcasting bandwagon with the start-to-finish guidance in
"Take Control of Podcasting on the Mac." Written by long-time
podcaster Andy Williams Affleck, "Take Control of Podcasting on the
Mac" leads you along the path to podcasting success from beginning to
end. Andy starts by helping you think about your topic, format, and
polish; assemble the best audio gear; and understand the pros and
cons of recording in four popular programs - Audio Hijack Pro,
GarageBand, Audacity, and SoundStudio. You'll find step-by-step
directions for how to record in each of those programs, along with
instructions on how to edit your recording by mixing in additional
audio and eliminating any awkward bits. Andy also explains how (and
why) to encode and tag your podcast file. Finally, he discusses how
to choose a podcast publishing tool, offers essential advice about
bandwidth costs, and gives you seven ways to promote your podcast.

Disney to Buy Pixar for $7.4B in Stock
By Gary Gentile, AP Business Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Walt Disney Co. said Tuesday it is buying
longtime partner Pixar Animation Studios Inc. for $7.4 billion in
stock in a deal that could restore Disney's clout in animation while
vaulting Pixar CEO Steve Jobs into a powerful role at the media
conglomerate.
Disney's purchase of the maker of the blockbuster films "Toy Story
and "Finding Nemo" would make Jobs Disney's largest shareholder.
Jobs, who owns more than half of Pixar's shares and also heads Apple
Computer Inc., will also join Disney's board.

More Information at http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/060124/
disney_pixar.html?.v=11

editor's note:

Steve Jobs bought Pixar from George Lucas for ten million dollars.
Pixar has made six blockbuster movies grossing over 3.2 billion
dollars. When Disney buys Pixar Steve jobs will become the largest
single share holder of Disney and be on Disney's Board. Not bad for a
guy that got fired from the company he founded, Apple. Talk about the
comeback kid!

Tip of the Month:

Narrowing Your Search by Giving Spotlight a Hint

If you want to narrow your search right off the bat, you can add a
category when you type the term in the Search field. For example, if
you’re looking for a song named “Vertigo” (by the band U2), there’s
no sense in having Spotlight bring you a list of email messages from
your ear doctor, right? So if you give Spotlight a hint as to what
you’re looking for, you can get just songs as your Spotlight search
results. Here’s how: Type “kind:music” (with no space in between or
quotations), then add one space and type “Vertigo” (again, you don’t
need the quotes). So your search will look like this: kind:music
Vertigo. Now it will only search songs, and you’ll only get song
results. Schweet!

Phishing fraudsters target Apple
By John Leyden for Reghardware.com

Email fraudsters are targeting Apple fans in a change of tactic from
standard phishing attacks. Commonly bogus emails that form the basis
of phishing attacks pose as security messages from online banks in an
attempt to dupe a tiny proportion of recipients, who happen to be
customers of the bank, into visiting a bogus site on handing over
account information.
